Outdoor LED Displays: Advantages of the IP68 Protection Rating

IP protection ratings follow the IEC60529 standard and consist of two digits: the first digit represents solid dust protection capability, and the second digit represents liquid waterproof protection capability; the higher the digit, the stronger the protection.

IP65: the first digit 6 achieves complete dust protection, and the second digit 5 resists low-pressure water jets from all directions, handling daily rainfall and washing spray, but it does not support immersion and has limits against long-term high humidity and persistent heavy rain. IP67 is also fully dustproof, and waterproof level 7 supports short 30-minute temporary immersion at 1 meter depth, aimed at accidental brief immersion scenarios; it does not mean it can stay in outdoor conditions under persistent rain long term. IP68 reaches the highest dust level, completely blocking dust intrusion, and waterproof level 8 supports long-duration continuous immersion tests under specified conditions, the highest waterproof-capability spec among the three, able to handle the harsh environments of persistent heavy rain and long-term infiltration by high-humidity water vapor.

A brief summary: IP65 resists spray, IP67 resists short immersion, IP68 can withstand the long-term continuous intrusion of water vapor and rain.

Many people form the wrong belief: as long as the product label says IP68, the equipment can adapt to all harsh outdoor environments. In fact, a single IP protection value is only a laboratory test result, not equal to the long-term reliability of the actual project. An outdoor LED is a high-power electronic device that continuously generates heat, and if only the sealing level is pursued and the heat dissipation design cannot keep up, internal condensation easily forms inside the sealed cavity, and water vapor can also corrode circuit boards and power supplies, causing screen failures.
